A Family Must Read For 2018: The Wingfeather Saga

We do a ton of reading in our house; both silently and out loud. Some is for school requirements, but most is for the pure enjoyment of all the adventures you can embark on.  We love to “do voices”!
So when my sister-in-law recommended that we read this series, we borrowed the first one from our library. Little did I know that for the next, uh, 4 weeks, we wouldn’t get much other “school work” done….

The books follow the lives of 3 children, Janner, Tink, and Leeli, who are raised by their mother and ex-pirate grandfather. Although they seem like normal children, there is a mystery that seems to surround them.
Then, one ordinary day, something happens that changes the course for the rest of their lives. All the questions they’ve kept in their hearts begin to be revealed and answered. There are dragons, sword fights, talking beasts, as well as giant tree houses, flying uncles, and green fangs.

One reason I love these books is because the family isn’t perfect!  They face many trials and find themselves in less than desirable situations, yet they lean on one another and persevere through.   The characters don’t always make wise decisions, but through them all, they remain faithful to one another and what really matters.  The character qualities that you see developing in the children of these books are ones that I want my own kids to have.  Courage, bravery, contentment, forgiveness, loyalty, faithfulness, love, and a sense of humor 🙂

The Author, Andrew Peterson, does such an excellent job at describing the people and their settings, that you truly feel like you’re in the world with them.  Every chapter contains his whit and creativity….and he leaves you on a cliff hanger every time!  You can’t help but read the next chapter, then the next, and the next…

When I read them out loud to the family, the kids and I established our own “voices” for each character.  Then we found out that they were also on Audio CD!  We were surprised to found out that what we had imagined them to sound like was pretty close to the narrator’s idea!  The [amazon_textlink asin=’1598593528′ text=’Audio CDs’ template=’ProductLink’ store=’besidethecreek-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’aea2bf49-0ae5-11e8-bec7-e3d0f8d668bc’] are great for long car rides and rainy afternoons.

Here’s what some of our family members have to say about The Wingfeather Saga:

9 year old boys-
“Our favorite part is Anklejelly Manor when the boys start going down to the cellar. They come to an iron door and start punching in a code to open it…”—from On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness

“It’s awesome when Tink knocks out the Strander!”

“Janner is stubborn, but a good protective throne warden.”

Mom of 8-
“I love the part about Leeli’s dog growing. It just hit me that the seemingly insignificant things in our lives sometimes end up to be the things that the Lord uses to bring about great blessing and show us about selflessness and sacrifice.”

The Daddy-
“I like Oood!”

7 year old girl-
“My favorite part is when Leeli falls into the sea with the sea dragons!”

Grandmother of 13-
“Since I’m in the middle of the saga, I’m reading about Sara Cooper in the fork factory. There’s an incident where she is encouraged to not give up, but take hold of the hope that was ignited in her by Janner…”

How about some snippets from the books themselves?

“Blood was shed that you three might breathe the good air of life, and if that means you have to miss out on a Zibzy game, then so be it. Part of being a man is putting others’ needs before your own.”

“When children say it’s time to leave, they mean, “It’s time to leave.” When grownups say so, they really mean, “It’s time to begin thinking about leaving sometime in the near future.”
Andrew Peterson, [amazon_textlink asin=’1400073871′ text=’North! or Be Eaten‘ template=’ProductLink’ store=’besidethecreek-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’206bfcfd-086f-11e8-8112-f961b5fe5b5e’]

“She turned around and said, “Is there anything I can do?”

It was the only thing she could have said that he couldn’t answer with anger, which frustrated Janner even more. If she had asked what was wrong, he would have hurled a perfectly sassy reply right back at her. If she had told him to cheer up, he would have grouched something about how cheery he’d be if he had played with puppies all day. If she had tried to be silly to cheer him up, he would have barked that he was sorry he wasn’t in the mood for games.

But “Is there anything I can do?” poured cool water on his fire. It told him that she cared. It told him that she saw he needed something, even if she didn’t know what. It told him that she hurt with him.”

“So once someone remembers their true name, they’re cured?” Janner asked. “I wish it were so. We all forget from time to time, and so we need each other to tell us our stories. Sometimes a story is the only way back from the darkness.”
