Let’s just take a minute to talk about when the mundane, unchanging parts of life seem to take over and the heaviness of it all pushes you down.
You know: when the financial situation doesn’t change, the chronic pain isn’t healed, the spouse remains distant, the rebellious child wounds with their words, or the car continues to sit unfixed. The part of life that, frankly, stinks.
There’s a song by Sixpence None the Richer called “Breathe Your Name”. One of the lines says, “It’s everyday I’m in this place, I feel this way, I feel the same…I can only breathe your name.” That’s it: some days following Jesus Christ is just like that, and our devotion to Him consists of only a breath.
During those days, months, or even years of ‘unchanging’ circumstances of life, sometimes only a whimper of hope resides in our hearts, but a whimper it is! And it’s alive!

He always sends hope.
My situation isn’t looking any different, but He is gradually changing my focus. Instead of concentrating on all the things I can’t do or situations I’m unable to change, He’s opening my eyes to the goodness around me. The people He strategically places in my path, the cuddly kid next to me on the couch, the tiny purple flowers hidden in the woods waiting for only me to see. He’s working on my affections as well. Instead of seeking the next hottest trend or buying the latest gadget, I want to spend more time in the Word, enjoy a coloring page with my daughter, catch crawdads with my boys, or just sit on my front porch watching the birds. 😉
Investing time and love in people instead of things.
It’s okay to cry. It’s okay to be disappointed with life sometimes. But for those whose life is hidden in Christ, the here and now is not all there is. There’s an inheritance being kept for us and us for it!
God, in His sovereignty, may bring changes to our situations and we will rejoice! But, it may not be fulfilled this side of Glory, yet we can still rejoice! We are a people who have hope. Truth says, “Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.” Romans 12:12
“Why do you say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel, ‘My way is hidden from the Lord, and my right is disregarded by my God?’ Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grown weary; his understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not be faint.” Isaiah 40:27-31
Don’t fret if some days all you can do is breathe His name. You will find out that the everlasting arms are underneath you. When you can’t hold on to Jesus, you learn that He has, currently is, and will continue to hold on to you. You need only be still and trust.
